About Belmont

Belmont Park, in Elmont, New York, just beyond the New York City line in Nassau County, is one of American racing's most storied venues and the home of the Belmont Stakes, the third and final jewel of the Triple Crown. Opened in 1905, it is famous for its enormous main dirt track — a mile and a half around, the largest in North American Thoroughbred racing and nicknamed "Big Sandy" — along with two turf courses. Operated by the New York Racing Association, Belmont has also hosted the Breeders' Cup World Championships several times. The track is undergoing a major reconstruction that will add a winterized, year-round facility; during the rebuild its racing shifted to Aqueduct and recent runnings of the Belmont Stakes were held at Saratoga. The modernized Belmont Park is planned to reopen as the centerpiece of New York racing.
