About Los Alamitos Thoroughbred

Los Alamitos, in Cypress, California, is best known for Quarter Horse racing but has also hosted Thoroughbred meets since 2014, when the closure of Hollywood Park left Southern California needing additional dates and the track expanded its oval to a full mile. Its Thoroughbred racing is highlighted by the Los Alamitos Futurity, a stakes for two-year-olds formerly known as the Hollywood Futurity that became, in 1983, the first million-dollar race for juveniles in America. The companion Starlet Stakes fills a similar role for two-year-old fillies. The Futurity's roll of honor includes future Kentucky Derby winners and other champions from its years at Hollywood Park. Thoroughbred racing at Los Alamitos is staged in short seasonal meets that fit around the track's year-round Quarter Horse schedule.
