About Saratoga

Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, is one of the oldest sporting venues in the United States and the oldest major Thoroughbred track still in operation. Racing in the area dates to the 1860s, and the track is affectionately known as "the Spa." It features a main dirt oval with two turf courses and is operated by the New York Racing Association, which runs a celebrated summer meet from mid-July through Labor Day. Its signature race is the Travers Stakes, the "Midsummer Derby" and the oldest major Thoroughbred race in the country, joined by Grade 1 fixtures such as the Whitney and Alabama Stakes. Saratoga has long carried the nickname "the graveyard of champions" for the many heavily favored stars upset there over the decades.
