About Colonial Downs

Colonial Downs is a Thoroughbred racetrack in New Kent County, Virginia, situated along Interstate 64 between Richmond and Williamsburg. Opened in 1997, it ceased racing in 2014 and went dark for several years before reopening in 2019, its revival funded largely by historical horse racing gaming. The track is notable for its expansive surfaces, including a mile-and-a-quarter main dirt oval and the Secretariat Turf Course, billed as the widest grass course in North America. Its signature races include the Virginia Derby and Virginia Oaks, and it has more recently hosted a festival of transplanted graded turf stakes. Racing at Colonial Downs takes place during a summer meet, with the large majority of its races run on turf.
