About Del Mar
Del Mar, officially the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, is a seaside racetrack in Del Mar, California, about twenty miles north of San Diego, famous for its slogan "Where the Turf Meets the Surf." It opened in 1937 under a group of Hollywood figures that included Bing Crosby, who is said to have personally greeted fans at the gate on opening day. The track features a one-mile main dirt oval and an inner turf course, and ran on a synthetic Polytrack surface from 2007 before returning to dirt in 2015. Its marquee race is the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, and Del Mar hosted the Breeders' Cup World Championships in 2017 and 2021. Best known for its glamorous summer meet, the track has earned the nickname "the Saratoga of the West."
