About Hawthorne

Hawthorne Race Course is a Thoroughbred track in Stickney and Cicero, Illinois, just outside Chicago, founded by Edward Corrigan and opened in 1891. It is one of the oldest continuously operating racetracks in the United States and has long been run by the Carey family. The track features a one-mile main dirt oval and a turf course, and has historically hosted both Thoroughbred and harness racing. Among its traditional stakes are the Hawthorne Gold Cup and the Illinois Derby, once a notable Kentucky Derby prep. With the earlier closure of Arlington Park, Hawthorne became the principal Thoroughbred venue in the Chicago area.
