About Kentucky Downs
Kentucky Downs is a Thoroughbred racetrack in Franklin, Kentucky, just north of the Tennessee border along Interstate 65. Originally opened in 1990 as Dueling Grounds, it is unique in North America for its all-turf, European-style course: a roughly mile-and-a-half kidney-shaped layout with undulations and a right-hand bend rather than a conventional oval. The track holds a short, festival-style meet each September that is known for exceptionally high purses and large field sizes. Its stakes calendar includes the Kentucky Turf Cup and the Franklin-Simpson Stakes. The grounds take their history from a 19th-century site once used for duels, which were legal in Kentucky but not in neighboring Tennessee.
