About Fonner Park
Fonner Park is a Thoroughbred racetrack in Grand Island, Nebraska, named for local rancher August "Gus" Fonner. It opened in 1954 and races on a compact five-eighths-mile dirt oval, a defining feature that shapes the character of its races. The track holds a short late-winter and spring meet, generally running from February into May, and is the most prominent Thoroughbred venue in Nebraska. Its featured event is the Gus Fonner Stakes. In recent years the facility has added racetrack gaming as Nebraska has expanded casino-style wagering at its licensed tracks.
