About Golden Gate Fields

Golden Gate Fields was a Thoroughbred racetrack on the shore of San Francisco Bay, straddling the cities of Berkeley and Albany, California. Opened in 1941, it served for more than eight decades as the leading Thoroughbred venue in Northern California. The track raced on a one-mile synthetic Tapeta main surface, converted from dirt in 2007, along with a turf course, and its signature events included the San Francisco Mile and the California Derby. Owned by The Stronach Group, Golden Gate Fields ran its final live card in June 2024, after which the company consolidated its California racing at Santa Anita Park. The site is slated for redevelopment, with plans to convert the bayfront property into public parkland.
