About Mountaineer

Mountaineer is a Thoroughbred racetrack, casino, and resort in New Cumberland, West Virginia, along the Ohio River in the state's Northern Panhandle. Opened in 1951 as Waterford Park, it was renamed Mountaineer in the 1980s and races on a one-mile main oval — the only mile track in West Virginia — with an inner turf course. Its signature race is the West Virginia Derby, a summer stakes for three-year-olds. Mountaineer holds a long racing season that stretches across much of the year. It made history in 1994 as one of the first U.S. tracks to add slot machines, helping pioneer the racino model that later revived many regional venues.
